Jump in and make an impression

The Spindoctor admits a lucky break can play a part in getting that first job - but it's not all down to luck. When you get the lucky break jump in at the deep end and make the right impression

I got my first full-time job because a classmate at university had the flu.

Well, that is partially true. The student in question was due to complete a work experience placement at a sports media outlet but I was asked to take her place because of the illness.

After a successful week, I was offered casual employment and after a further six months, I was poached by an influential partner of this company which happens to be a major sporting body.

On reflection I had the best start imaginable to my young career, going from a journalism student to a Media & Communications Officer in my dream field of sport.

Yes – I was extremely fortunate to get the initial break but it’s what you do with these breaks that count.

From the moment I set foot in the door of my work placement media outlet, I did everything possible to make a good impression including:

  1. Meeting deadlines
  1. Being proactive in completing tasks
  1. Learning to write in a particular style
  1. Interacting with co-workers I barely knew
  1. Exuding a sense of confidence
  1. Maintaining professional appearance and practice
  1. Applying the skills gained in university

Because I executed proficiently from the outset, the organisation was keen to offer me ongoing work.

Treat work experiences and internships like job interviews. Show what you can do and give people a reason to employ your services.

It doesn’t matter how you get your start, but it does matter how you approach it.

Be ready to jump into the deep end, because if you can make the most of even the smallest and most fortunate opportunity, good things will happen.
